A Party Day, Phase 2

80/ 365

We held Sam's 5th Birthday Party at our house this year.  We alternate every year, one birthday Out, one birthday at Home.  This year, he requested all things Green. So I took some liberties at what would be at a Green Party.

First, I shopped for cake.  I found a key lime cake mix at Target while shopping this week, as well as vanilla.  Sam told me he wanted both.  It was a hard decision.  I ended up with both.  We baked and decorated a key lime bundt cake with key lime icing, and vanilla cupcakes with green dinosaur icing.  I found kits with candy triangles, and little heads on toothpicks, and the wrappers were dino legs.  They were so cute, I couldn't resist.

For centerpieces, I broke out the white tulips that I found at Trader Joe's.
Beautiful!

They don't make them green. I suppose if they'd had carnations, I could have put them in green water and blah, blah, blah, but frankly, I like the white better.  Simple yet elegant.

While I was running all over town, getting Lisa and going to Daddy's Retirement, Eric came home and rescued me, by putting all the things back together around the house.  When I got home, the house looked Amazing!  He put most of the food and goodies in the foyer, so that everyone would feel comfortable enough to spread out...which they did!

When the kids got there, we had dinner - nuggets and macaroni, and other things Sam likes, then the kids went out to play.  Kathleen had acquired a green pinata (a last minute Friday morning request that I'd told Sam no) for us, so Eric put it on a stick and the kids lined up in the driveway (it was 65 outside!) to beat on it. It wasn't the kind with strings, and we didn't have a bat to hit it out yet.

Charlie was the lucky girl, she knocked the head off the green turtle and no red 40 lollipops and chocolates went all over the driveway.  Kids were diving everywhere.  It was Awesome.

In their goodie bags, there were glow sticks, the kind that make bracelets and glow fingers.
Of course, that's just the beginning.  But as the sun went down, and all the glowy things came out, the kids were so excited. Sam especially!

After the pinata, while half the kids were chomping on lollipops, we chose to do presents.
Our living room was a Sea of Green!
I loved it.

Chris helped Sam, and there was green carnage, and it was beautiful.

After presents, we broke out the cake.

5 candles for a big 5 year old boy

When the candles were lit, our sea of green loved ones sang to Sam.
And Sam blew his candles out, with a little help from his brother.
I loved the key lime cake, if I see that mix again, I'm snagging it.  But the kids loved the dino cupcakes.

See all those loved ones.  Sam asked that everyone wear green in honor of his birthday.  Only a couple people didn't get the memo, so we had green bead necklaces for them and for the kids.  Sam was so happy.
He declared it the Best Party Ever!
It may just have been.

A Party Day, Phase 1

My Dad has worked at the same place for 35 years.
Can you believe that?!  Who does that anymore?
Very very few.
Yesterday, they for his 35 years of Service at St. Francis as he approaches his retirement at the beginning of April.  He only has a couple more weeks.  After 35 years!  What a countdown.  He told me a couple weeks ago about this wingding they were having at work from 2-4 on Friday the 21st  to celebrate his retirement, and he mentioned, oh, you don't need to come, I know it's in the middle of the day, with naptime, and kids in school, I completely understand that you can't make it.  And don't worry, he said, I know Sam's party is that night, so we'll just see you then.

And yet, I wanted to go.  I wanted to go see these people send Daddy off with style, and show their appreciation for all he's done for them in the last 35 years.  He has seen this Hospital for so many changes, it's amazing.  I was in preschool when he started working at St. Francis.  Actually, I started at the St. Francis Hospital Day Care Center for my preschool and kindergarten shortly after he started. ;)  I remember being taught his work phone number in a nifty little rhyme, 783-83-12 Dad! (and you have you say Dad! with Jazz Hands).  He was their Director of Public Relations.  I knew how to say that long before I had any idea what it actually meant.  As he retires, his official title is Director of Strategic Planning and Marketing.  They've been using his mad skills for years, I wonder what this hospital is going to do without him.

Anyway, I wanted to go.  And so did my sister.  Only Lisa broke her toe on Thursday evening, and couldn't walk, let alone Drive down to the south side.  So Eric saved the day, and cut his day short, so he could help with party prep, and greet the boys home from school, so that Lisa and I could make an appearance at Dad's wingding.  Jake and I drove up and grabbed Lisa and the girls before heading south.  But I'd never been to this hospital, and I had no idea where we were going.  And it's Huge.
We parked on the wrong side, but I had the wherewithal to drop Li off at the entrance, so she could get in a wheelchair, and I put Jake in his backpack.  The girls rode on her lap as the volunteer walked us through the maze that is that hospital to find the party.  As you can imagine, we were late.
When we walked in, there were probably a hundred people sitting down listening to some gentleman I don't know speak. It was like he was Introducing Dad.  I don't know who he was, Dad's boss probably.  But everyone was paying attention to him, and when we walked in...well, we created quite a stir.  He stopped talking.  And here we were, a couple harrowed moms, one in a wheelchair, and 3 small children.  Well, Daddy, piped right in, "And these are my daughters and grandchildren!"  Everyone turned to look at us.  We must have been quite a sight! The girls took off of Lisa's lap, and went dashing to Daddy, to spin around and show everyone how adorable they were in the dirndls that Opa got them from Germany.  Lucky for us they were so adorable, that they distracted from the scene of our entrance.

The girls stole the show, temporarily, with their spinning and sweetness.

Daddy was presented with the "Heavy Hitter Award", a Louisville Slugger bat signed with love from his coworkers.  The Presentation was so sweet, that Lisa and I started getting teary. They even gave MB this humongous bouquet of roses which smelled wonderful!

Daddy and MB at the retirement.
This photo makes me mad, I wish I'd brought my real camera, with everything else, I only had my point and shoot, and apparently it failed and made blurry pictures of Daddy and the presentations.  Grr.  I'm not happy with the quality of the photos.

Still, the hospital put on quite a spread.  It was clear that he was greatly appreciated. A few of his longtime coworkers stood up to say how much they'd miss him.  One of the nuns stood up to say how much he had been appreciated, and Lisa and I started tearing up before she even uttered a word.  We're a bunch of marshmallows!  It was clear that he was valued here, and that he will be so missed.  And that did my heart so much good.  He has put so much of himself, his time, his heart, in this work, I'm so glad that they see, understand, and appreciate all of it. I'm not nearly as good with names as my father, so when people came up who hadn't seen me in 30 years and still remembered me, I felt bad.  One former secretary came over to me, and when she introduced herself, I remembered her!  I said, I remembered you being taller.  We laughed, because of course, she would have been taller, when I was 10. ;)

We camped out at a table with the kids, bribing them with snacks, who all in all, really behaved quite remarkably.  And we found Daddy and MBs best friends, Dan and Kay, who we've called Danny Kaye for years. Even Jake behaved.  He even tolerated sitting on Lisa's lap for a while, while I rustled up some grub for the girls, but that's because she gave him treats, like broccoli, carrots, and cantelope.

See?!  Jacob gets a carrot from Aunt Lisa.  He even kind of nibbled it, well, stuck it in his mouth anyway.

Charlie being sweet.

Annie takes her shrimp tails and made fingernails out of them.
All by herself.  She'd not been shown this particular trick, this was all natural skills.

Annie had made Opa a very special card, and drawn him a picture, for his "Party Day".  Obviously, they wouldn't understand Retirement, or a retirement party.  But they understood Party.  And they knew he was celebrating something, and we were all happy to be there celebrating with him.  He was touched we were able to make it.  Sometimes, I think it's lucky that we have the kids with us all the time, they provide such a great distraction, that no one gets sappy too long, and bursts into tears.  Just a few leaky tears, and we move on, the kids always keeping us moving.  The whole afternoon was like that.  There were a couple tears, a little mush, but no one got too teary, the kids were too sweet and distracting to let that happen.

The girls were enchanting!

No wonder they stole the show. As the party came to a close, the girls and I took a shuttle bus to go back to the car.  See?!  That's how I know it's time for Dad to retire, the hospital has gotten so big, you have to take a Shuttle Bus to the car!  It was their first shuttle ride, and they were so excited, and had a great time.  Charlie felt like such a big girl, she'd not been on any kind of bus at all.   They thanked the busdriver profusely for such a wonderful ride.  We drove round to pick up Lisa, and Daddy and MB sent us home with 'just a few' of the leftovers: entire fruit, veggie, and cheese and cracker trays.  Like I said, it was a nice spread.  Although I must say, I've always loved St. Francis' food.  We grew up on their cafeteria food.  What are we going to do now that Daddy is retiring?  Well, spend more time with Opa!  Although he's not fully retiring, he'll still be teaching adjunct MBA/PR/Marketing type classes at various universities around town, but he's only been doing that or the last 25 years or so. ;)   That's a bargain in comparison!

Lisa and I commented on the way home, that we were exhausted, even though all we'd done was Drive, it was an emotional day, we were so touched, and there was lots of joy and sadness at the same time.  But there was no time for resting, we still had miles to go before we sleep.

Boy? Boy? I see no boy.

Jacob looks and acts much more than a little boy than a baby now that he's so mobile.
Sit down baby, sit down!
When did they become little boys?
These two have been my babies for so long, I just looked at them today, and suddenly, they look like Boys.

They really do grow so fast.  Too fast.
Maybe it's true for all moms that their kids seem to grow up so fast.  It didn't seem to go this fast with Chris.  But it seems like just this week, Sam has grown, he doesn't turn 5 until next week, but he's very ready.  And Jake is 10 1/2 months, but we might as well be calling him 'almost 1'.  I'm rounding up already.  Oh Jeez.

Projects

Sorry about the delay in the dailies, but our internet went down for 2 days this week, Twitch Twitch, and then I had Party Palooza to deal with.  Of course, as always, I kept taking pictures, even if I couldn't post them immediately, I still love to capture our daily life on film. These days go so fast, and the boys are growing and changing so quickly, if I don't capture them, I'm afraid I'll forget.

Wednesday was a day of many completed projects.  First, for me.

Back in January, I started something special, just for me.  I have been knitting this 'noro' scarf...though mine wasn't made with Noro brand yarn, because Dang, that stuff is expensive.  But it's so warm.  Of course, as soon as I finished it, and decided to wear it, the weather warmed up.  Ignore the photobombing baby.

The final product!

I don't care if it's 60 degrees out, I'm wearing the scarf!

Then I did some shopping, putting the finishing touches on some party purchases for Sam's party on Friday night.

I got some beautiful tulips for Sam from Trader Joe's.  They have the prettiest bouquets. And I forget how much I love fresh flowers.  They had them in groups of 10, so I picked up a white bouquet, split them into 2 groups, making 5 for each bouquet for Sam, and they made him smile.  It's going to be a fun party.

Christopher came home with this present for me.  It's an elephant!  He made it in art class at school, and he said it got into a jungle attack, and that's how it lost an ear and the tip of her trunk.  Honestly, I think it's a girl elephant, because that one giant pink ear looks kind of like a bow.

Chris says he made this for me, because he knows how much I love receiving these beautiful gifts.  I do, I really do!  I put her in a place of honor in the living room, next to my 'world' pinch pot from last year.  It's almost like my new little elephant is drinking from the watery pinch pot.

Dizzy

77/365

I have been feeling Dizzy all day.  This song has been stuck in my head consequently.  youtube.com/watch?v=kCDPlU6ioZU

I woke up this morning, sat up and turned around to grab Jake, and my head began to swim.  Well, crap, welcome back vertigo.
Luckily (?), our plans for the day had a stay-at-home back-up plan, so my friend Melissa brought over some playmates for Sam. And we camped out on the couch, drinking coffee and me not moving much.  I am Thankful that Jake is content, for the most part, in my lap.  That was helpful. Now that he's mobile, he likes to cruise the couch and coffee table.  But when he needed me, he was close. And Sam was so good, he could go and get his own things, he just needed a bit of help.  And he was a huge help to me too.
After naps, I felt less like ass and that gave me hope that I might be able to get behind the wheel of my car tomorrow.  I hope.

So, Jacob was my cohort in crime.
He spent most of the day, like I said staying close.  But he likes to pet Prinny too.

I enjoy a quiet day with sweetboys, but I hope I feel better tomorrow.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

76/365

What's up with my baby sticking his tongue out all the time?

This morning, the boys were all decked out in green.
We were ready to celebrate St. Paddy's!
To start, Eric made us a great breakfast of green biscuits.
We joked that it would make the boys poop green.
They thought that was hysterical...until Chris found out just how true that was during his flush this afternoon, then he thought it was AWESOME!  I tell you, boys and poop.  Well, boys and any bodily function, really. This day may be forever forward be known around here as a green poop holiday.

We loved the green biscuits.
Jake and I had a lot of fun today taking the car in, and shopping with Mom for Green things for Sam's party.  And for dinner, Eric sauteed up some shamrock pasta.
We found this great shamrock pasta at Costco filled with dubliner cheese, it was a big hit all around.

Perhaps all these foods aren't quite 'traditional' Irish fare.
But around here, they are becoming new traditions.

Sneaky Squealy Sweetboy

75/365

Jake is on the move.  Today, he cruised around the loft, and got to the gate.  I told him No.  He didn't listen.  He kept giving me this minxy look.  Of course, moments after this was taken he fell. He didn't believe me until he put all his weight on the door, and pulled it open, causing him to go flying backwards.  Luckily, he was on the carpet.  He's already got  a bruise on his head.  I swear I'm not beating him, he's just bumping into everything.  Tis the age.

He also makes a tremendous squeal noise.  But I don't have any video of that.  He sees the video camera come out and beep, and he's immediately silent and just stares at it.  Boys, sheesh.
