Decking the Halls

So, Saturday night, after our State Museum adventures, we came home to Eric having put up one of the Christmas trees.  He'd been working while we were gone, but then he finished what he needed, and got the trees out, and during naptime, got the living room tree put together.  The boys were very excited to get started putting ornaments on the tree.

341/365

When I got up this morning, I came downstairs, and this was what I found.
Sam couldn't wait to get started working on finishing the tree. He was putting ornaments on, whether they were Jake friendly or not.  Mostly they weren't.  I began helping, and I dropped one, and it shattered everywhere.  We'd lost 1 the night before too.   So we got more careful about Jake friendly ornaments on the bottom.

Jacob quickly figured out that he likes to help with the tree too.  And we learned, that isn't necessarily a good thing.  He likes to pull ornaments off the tree.  And sometimes throw them.

When Jacob pulled one off the tree, threw one, and shattered it, all while we were running towards him, we had to put him in lockdown.  He did not appreciate being locked in his high chair.  But he was breaking too many things.  He shattered our hand painted Niagara Falls ornament.  :(

Meanwhile, Sunday evening, Kaylee had a party.  It was her official, Chemo is Over party.
It was just an open house at their church, but it was good to see lots of friends, family, and prayer warriors who have been supporting her all this time.  Apparently, some of her cousins made the trip from multiple states away for this party.  What an honor!  She really had an army of prayer warriors praying for her!
The last time we got the whole fam to pose for a picture all together, was like one month before I found out I was pregnant with Jacob, and weeks before her diagnosis.   And I love that we have three new family members too. ;) This is a picture of triumph!

The State Museum

340/365

Eric has been really busy with this work project, and I've been trying to get out of his hair.  So Saturday morning, the boys and I took off to the Indiana State Museum.  They were rumored to have a train exhibit, and I know the Eiteljorg does too.  Chris was asking to go to the State Museum.  And I'm such a sucker for museums.  So I dressed them up for holiday festivity, and we hit the road.

Sam loved to show his his green pompom from his elf hat I made last year.

Christopher looks perfectly ready to go enjoy some train time.

And after Jacob saw me taking pictures of all his brothers, he lined up against the closet door and said "dee" for his turn too.  OK babe.

First stop the library.  We had to return some things we got over break, and Chris wanted some new stuff to read.  Probably my best idea ever, because no one fought, or really said a word the entire drive downtown.  The read the whole way down.  It was great, and very quiet.  Just the way I like to travel.

Sweet reading travelers.

Turns out Indiana State Museum had a Santa Claus visiting.
And there was No Line.  We walked right up.  And I told the guy, I wasn't too sure about paying for a photo when I thought Jake might lose his mind, or Sam.  All my boys tended to freak out at Santa when they were that age.   Of course, that makes for endearing pictures now, but it meant I didn't want to spend money on them.   We thought it a good idea to put the big boys on Santa's lap, and Jacob on Chris's lap.  He was pretty content with that.   Unsure, sure, but not screaming.  It went really well.  They did such a great job, that not only did I take a few photos, but I bought one too!

Santa took a few minutes (since again, no one in line behind us!) to listen to what the boys wanted for Christmas.  Chris asked for Leonardo (little does he know, that Sam already picked that out - tee hee hee).  And Sam asked for the Octonauts he didn't already have.  Good Luck Santa, trying to figure those out, for sure, Inkling and Dashi, which I've only found in miniature. But you know, if anyone can figure it out, Santa can!

In the main hall of the museum, they had an Ayres exhibit, looking like the windows of the Ayres downtown, when it still existed.  My kids thought I was must've been ancient when I told them stories of when we'd go shopping there.  When my Grandma would come to town, we'd go down for the day, shop all 8 floors, and have lunch in the Tea Room on top.  We didn't necessarily buy things on all 8 floors, but it was fun to walk about and see if there was anything else we needed.  Good times.

The museum had a passport of sorts, where we could go all over and get stamps for different holiday related activities.  We started at Santa and Mrs. Claus's house, meeting Santa.  And then we went to to the Ayres Tea Room for lunch (we arrived at 11).  Turns out there was at least an hour and a half wait, so we put our name in there, and went over to the North Pole playland to play.  The big boys went running over to a table full of Legos and just played.  For like, an hour!

Jacob loved this giant nutcracker, and continued to turn and say "dee" to me, as cheese, every time I turned the camera on him.  Also adorable.

Remember last month, the Brown Elementary Game Night?  When Jacob fell in love with the game Connect Four?  Well, they had a giant version at the museum.   And once again, the boy was in love.

Can you hear him saying, "Whoa...."  Oh wow.  Yeah, he spend a significant chunk of time here too.

I did get them to pose for me, ever so briefly by the County tree.
Each county in Indiana, there are 92, had a special ornament on the tree.

The boys wanted to take a walk down to get a better look at the train going around the pendelum clock.  Man, I'm glad that these hats make them easy to spot.

The boys take a long look down at the swinging pendelum clock.  One might even call it hypnotizing.

After checking out the clocks and a few other things on the top floor, we stopped at the last stop on our stamp, before the Tea Room.   Our last stop was the North Pole train.  Apparently, this train used to make rounds at the downtown Ayres store too during the holidays.  Now it's coming full circle, as an exhibit at the State Museum.  Frankly, the boys had a Wonderful time on it.

It was weird for me to let the boys ride on it by themselves.  I let Chris be in charge of Jacob.  But the thing only went like 2 miles an hour, and they weren't far.  Jake does well if he has his brothers.  He gave them the same serious face he gives us all.

After all three boys went around, they got off, and I got Jake in the seat again.  They realized that another group was going to go again.  There were only the half dozen of us up there, not even a waiting line.  It was Awesome!  So I let Chris and Sam ride again.  And Jacob watched.  They both loved having a little brother on the sidelines to wave to.  Jake didn't mind much either.  He thought it was kind of funny to see big brothers go round.

When we went back to the Tea Room, they made us wait for another 1/2 hour, by which time, Sam and I were about to lose our minds.  We're the ones that get the most angry without food.  We'd blown through my piddly stash of snacks, and we were hungry.  I was not down with waiting until almost 2 to eat.  God Bless Jake and Chris though.   They held up like superchamps.

I was very proud of the boys, they actually did really well in the Tea Room.   Not bad for real cups and silverware, I was afraid they might throw things and make a mess.  But they didn't.  They were good.  They were hungry, and they wanted some Tea.  Me too!

Well, Jacob threw things.  He kept tossing his crayons.  He'd color for about 10 seconds and throw a crayon over his head behind him, I was constantly picking them up, because I was afraid someone would trip.  I should have known that if I'd just given him a packet of sugar, he'd have been just fine.  When they brought out the tea, Jake didn't want any of that.  But he wanted to play with the sugar packets.  Whatever, he was easily occupied.

Sam picked a nice green tea (big surprise) for his drink.
And he was so sweet as we prepared it.  It was too hot to drink for a while though.

Christopher surprised me with his mellowness at taking tea.  He had chosen English Breakfast.  I chose Honeybush Caramel, which had such a natural sweetness, I barely needed to add any sweetener.  They had fun pouring, stirring, and making their cups of tea, just so.  They just were upset it was too hot.  So I had them use their teaspoons to poost a sip.  That did the trick.

All of us loved having tea in the tea room!
We ate too.  They had the most fabulous chicken velvet soup, smooth and creamy, and all of us ate it up!  There was only a smidge leftover.  Because there were only about 2 seconds between soup delivery and lunch.  Not exactly the most well organized.  Then again, they can't help it, they're only open 1 month out of the year, except for big groups.  I think I just might need to go again!

Happy, Happy Birthday, Baby!

339/365

Eric's 40th Birthday was Friday the 5th!

The Birthday Pig brought our hero an Underarmour Captain America tshirt.
Our hero wants to get running again.

Eric worked from home, so that he could be home to receive his big present from his parents.
The gift of plumbing!
Mom and Dad's gift to him (us!) was to send a plumber over to fix the shower drains in the bathrooms.  Eric knows a ton about building a house, and he is mostly self taught, but really, since we moved in, he hasn't had time to sit down and learn how to fix the drains, let alone to actually fix them.   It was the big obstacle to finally getting the bathrooms fixed.  And when the plumber arrived, Jacob was so intrigued, he just stood outside the window as they banged around in the ceiling under the shower.  Good thing that ceiling already had holes in it. ;)

After the big boys went to school, we gave Daddy his gifts.
Sam had a wonderful idea for a gift, he wanted to give him a painting.  So we made a snowman painting out of everyone's footprints.

And there was coffee.  Lots of flavored fruity coffee, just like Daddy likes, and he's been needing more and more often lately.

Then we took him to the Disney Store.
I bet you wouldn't think that the Disney Store is the best place to go on your birthday.
But on your birthday, the Disney Store, will give you a Happy Birthday pin!
It just so happened, our friend Erin was working there when we arrived, she works there part time, and teaches music too.  She welcomed us in, gave us a hug, and got Eric a pin.  Too wonderful!
Then Eric picked a special present for himself, he chose an extra large C-3PO mug, perfect for all the long days and nights he's been working on the horrible project.

After our mad dash to the mall, we went up to The Journey.  We'd reserved a room, and taken over this fabulous chinese/american/sushi buffet.  Eric's idea of a good meal - all he can eat sushi!

This baby was covered in macaroni and cheese.
We couldn't take him seriously.

We couldn't take this boy seriously either.
Mom decided he needed a Star Wars light saber and Darth Vader mask for his birthday too.
Just like old times.
And yet, perfect.  For we've decided that to celebrate both our 40th birthdays this year, we're going to go to Disney World with our family, just in time for our wedding anniversary.  So our big party will be later, but we partied perfectly for now with some family and close friends.

Video game bros

Sam shows Jake how it's done - the playing of video games on a wintery eve.

Fare thee well

As I said, my sister came over and stayed with us on the 2nd, since I was taking them to the airport.  We were running a little late out the door, we had Girls going one direction, and Boys going another.

But I made them hold still, ever so briefly so I could get one last picture of them together before they had to go.  It's hard to capture a moving target.

My Dad showed up at the airport too.  And though Eric had made us a lovely cinnamon roll breakfast, that didn't stop us from having a little Starbucks at the airport while we waited for Lisa's plane.  It was actually a nice opportunity just hang out for a minute.

Apparently, the girls' backpacks were loaded with stuffies and goodies and snacks.  They kept trying to offer them to me, and get me to share with them.  They didn't understand, these were their special plane time treats.  It was very sweet.  And then well, they got on the plane, and they left me.
And now I'm sad.
I miss my Seestor and my sweetgirls.

The Last Slumber Party

 336/365

My sister and niece are going back to Texas already. It feels like they just got here.  I got to see them last Monday, but the boys only got to see them for a bit on Thanksgiving.  So I offered to take Lisa to the airport, and go get her and the girls on Tuesday.  That way they could spend the night, the girls and the boys could go crazy and get their fix.  The odds are very good they aren't going to be making it back home for Christmas, so we've got to get in while the getting is good.
I know, it's crazy to have a slumber party on a school night.  But there really wasn't any other option.  And we just shut them down a little late, they didn't stay up too late, they had to be at the airport about the same time as the boys had to go to school.  Still, there was copious amounts of cuteness.

So the girls were here when the boys got home from the bus.  They all played in the basement.  We skipped Scouts to have dinner as a family.  It was Taco Tuesday. :)  Taco Tuesday is always a big hit with my  boys, but the girls enjoyed it too.

After supper, everyone got their jammies on, and we curled up to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas.
A perfect end to the evening.

Taking care of me

335/365

I know, it rarely happens.  But I did a few things for me yesterday.  The kids went back to school, and you could have heard a pin drop it was so quiet.  I  did my nails.  Well, my toenails anyway.  My new wrap is called Tinsel Town, nice and sparkly for December.

And I actually read the book for book club.  I know... Madness!  I haven't read a whole book in ages.  I try, but they do not engage me, and so often they don't,  I cannot finish.  It's hard for me to finish a book when I don't like the main characters.   But this weekend, I started My Life in France by Julia Child.  And I loved her.  And I loved her story.

I could not put it down.
No, really. I couldn't.  It was like reading food porn.  The discussions of food were sounded so amazing, I couldn't stand it.  I want to make Boeuf Bourguignon!   And I hate raw meat.  And I hate cooking things that take more than one pot.  But she made me want to cook.  She makes me want to get in the kitchen.  That is impressive.  One might even say Life Changing.  Imagine, me, losing my nausea at the sight of raw meat.  We'll see if it happens.  I'm intrigued though. I loved the book.  I really couldn't put it down.  I loved this book!
