Road Trip Adventure

One of the things that Sam studied this year was the Shawnee Indians.  He made a great presentation of his research. As I was researching, I realized I had never been to Prophetstown, where the leaders of the Shawnee tried to unite all the Indian Nations.  Tecumseh, the chief of the Shawnee, and his brother, The Prophet.  I had never been up to Prophetstown, there's a State Park there, and the Battle of Tippecanoe is up there past Lafayette too.  'Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.' was all I could remember.  I wanted to learn more. While discussing this all with my friend Kathy, I decided that when Summer rolled around, I wanted to go see Prophetstown.  I knew Sam would get a lot out of it, and me too.  I also figured other brothers would just have a good time on a road trip.  My friend Kathy was interested in joining us, so we met up yesterday to go north and see what there was to see.

Priorities, yo.
First stop has to be Starbucks, with drinks for all!
We also met halfway between our homes, at the Zionsville Starbucks, so drinks were necessary.
I love that the boys all have drinks they like there now too.

Welcome to Prophetstown State Park!
As it turns out Kathy has the State Park pass, so she got us in free, which was bonus!

My sweetboys and I at the entry to Prophetstown.

We found the Blacksmith shop, on the ground by a 1920's farmhouse.

Of course, all that drinking made us all have to Go.  As soon as we got to some sort of Civilization within the Park, we had to find the bathrooms.  The Bathrooms and Smithery were right across the 'street' from the Farmhouse. I found a tick two seconds after I got out of the car.  Ew.  It made me spray us like a maniac for the rest of the day. Ticks don't like Peppermint.

Ding Dong, the boys ring the farm dinner bell, though it was still pretty early.

Check out this great iron stove.
I used to have a tiny iron model that Grandpa Jim and Meb gave me.  I was able to take the handle and lift the burners, to show the boys where it was lit.  My kids know nothing of gas stoves, we're all electric now.

Walking into the bedroom was like stepping into the past, it reminded me so much of my Grandparents and Great Grandparents. My Great Grandparent's photos were on the wall just like these!

The kids loved checking out the great old sewing machine.
I did too. I wanted to touch it all, and just hang out here.
We hadn't even found any of the Indian stuff.
This house belonged to owners of the land who donated it to become the State Park.

The piano player piano player piano room.

Is it a rocking chair, or a rocking horse?
Only Sam will ever know.

Jacob finds Chickens to observe, and chase.

This rooster had some things to say to Jacob.

My city boy was chasing the chickens around, like some kind of joke.

Now who's the Goose?
This silly boy couldn't wait to chase the ducks too.

The boys found some turkeys hiding in the shade.
Now who's the turkey?  The birds, or the nuts in the heat?

The boys couldn't wait to take off and check out the barn.

Oink Oink!

Sam popped back by to talk to the pigs hanging out in the shade.
I wonder if he was trying to guess which one was the Birthday Pig.

The boys found the bunnies.
I kept walking around singing, "The bunneh, the bunneh, Ooo, I love the bunneh."
Too many Veggie Tales.

Ginger the great big bunneh.

After our adventures at the Farm House, we opted to go over to the Nature Center, and see what was what.  But as soon as I opened the car, the kids took off.  Jacob specificially.   And as it turns out, Jacob found a bit of Nature before we even went indoors.  And the DNR guys came a running.
Jacob found a snake!

It's a Fox Snake.
One of his cousins lived inside, in the Nature Center.
We suspected he was going in for a visit.

The kids were scared, but so were the guards.
Once he was picked up, he brought the snakey over to say hi.
He's not poisonous, but he could still bite.  I loved seeing the DNR guy admitting his fear, but still picking it up, and doing so safely, without harming the snake.

The boys got to pet the snake.
I was particularly proud of Sam and Chris touching it.  They had the sense to be afraid.
Not Jacob, Jacob had to be restrained, he would've taken the thing home!

Gimme kiss!
Then the guys took a long walk and set him free in the weeds.  If he really wanted to come back, it was going to take him a fat long while.

Meanwhile back at the Nature Center, Christopher found a great outfit to try on!
Firefighter Chris to the Rescue!

Sam Saves the Day!
(He didn't get as dressed up as his brothers.

Firefighter Jacob to the rescue!

Pretty Painted Turtle was swimming around in the Nature Center.
There was an outdoor garden with a tiny pond, we hoped some of relatives would be out there, but no. Too hot.

Kathy shows Sam the skull of a deer, and asks him what it is.
They even compared/contrasted it with the skull of a raccoon.
It reminded me of the Field Museum, so many Stuffed Animals. (And not in the good way)
But the boys thought the bones and stuff they could play with were so cool.

Chris found the deer antlers.
I kind of love him for this.

After getting the scoop, we crossed the street and hiked a bit to find Prophetstown.

Inside one of the log homes were a bunch of old style farm tools.
This was the boy's favorite part!

Our Picnic lunch at Prophetstown.
Since the original was burned down, they rebuild some of the key structures out in the fields.  There is very little nearby, and as it turned out, the longhouse behind us was being rebuilt as an Eagle Scout project.

Sam finds a model of Prophetstown inside the Chief's Long House.

The boys gather around the 'fire' in the Chief's Council House.

The boys exit the Medicine Cabin.

We went back to find out how to prounounce the Prophet's real name.  It's Tenskwatawa.
As it turns out the pronounciation is flexible. It can be Ten-SQUAT-a-wa or Ten-swa-TA-wa.
Yeah, we'll just all call him The Prophet.
He thought that the only way to defeat the white man was to unite all the Indians together.
But after the loss of the Battle of Tippecanoe, he and his brother were disgraced.  They lost not only the battle, but the war.

The Battle of Tippecanoe Memorial
Battle Ground, IN

They made this hill a National Landmark.

While we were leaving Prophetstown, I saw a giant needle, rising above the trees from the fields below.  I was curious what that was, but we knew we were headed to 'Battle Ground'.
As it turned out, the giant needle was the Tippecanoe Memorial.

Jacob just wanted something to climb.

In memory of those who lost their lives at the Battle of Tippecanoe, November 8, 1811.
Dang, this thing was tall.

Guess who that general was, William Henry Harrison.
Yup, the fella who became President, and the slogan was Tippecanoe and Tyler too.
Tippecanoe was his nickname for winning the battle.

Stuffed snowy owl.
This was an accidental death near the Battle Ground, so they stuffed him for the Nature Center.
Beautiful.  Someday I want to see one in person.

In case you also don't remember what happened at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Jacob Crockett.
He really wanted one of these hats.
In fact, all the boys wanted goodies from the Gift Shop.
But it was enough that we had to pay real $$ to go into their bitty museum.  I wasn't spending $ on toys.  But then Kathy snuck around and got them all a treat, while we headed in.
Ah, she knows how to spoil some sweetboys.   Rock Candy.

One of the identifying features of Shawnee clothing was the fringe.
I love that they had this sample out that the kids could play with and shake.
They thought that rattling the fringe was Awesome.

Shake that crazy fringe.

Check out these uniforms for the Dragoons and Drummer Boys.
People were shorter back in these days.  The drummer was about Chris's height. Yipes.

Sam checks out the model of Prophetstown.
Hey, we were just there!

The biggest hit for the boys in this mini-museum was the canon.
They climbed, shot, battled, and hit imaginary enemies.
I also thought the flag behind them was interesting.  There are only 17 stars, because Indiana was just a Territory when all this happened.  It was another 5 years before we became a state.
Yeah, I have boys.  I'd have walked right by the canon, but they thought it was the bee's knees.

Chris thought the Blunderbuss gun that the Dragoons used to use was pretty Awesome.  They had guns and rifles on display for every American war so far, which was pretty cool.  Of course, the littles just wanted to play with the canon.

Meanwhile, they had some other great patriotic goodies in the Museum.
Personally, I loved this dress.  I could rock this look.  Or maybe, in my spare time someday, I'll just make one of these for myself to wear for Patriotic Holidays.

Last Day of School

Photo Session

Today was probably the prettiest day we've had all year so far.
Gorgeous, beautiful May weather.
Perfect for getting outside.
Daddy did do a bit of yard work, but since it's Mother's Day, I couldn't resist a picnic.
We decided to do a small photo shoot and have a picnic down at Arbuckle Park.

My Boys on the bridge.

The boys thought that peeking through the planks was Awesome!

The boys head up the stairs to the playground to play.

Boys on a rock.
I love this one.

Trying a different angle of boys on the rock.
Jacob wasn't quite as happy up there at this angle though.
He got nervous, and eventually grabbed Chris's hair to hold onto.
That didn't go over well.
But we played for a while, had a KFC picnic lunch.
And Mommy got her first sunburn of the season for Mother's Day.

Taking a Moment

I read something this morning, about why we do what we do.
Specifically, it was an article about parents, and why those of us that stay home attend all the rehearsals, and be home after school, just to be available to our kids.
Because it doesn't last.
My baby is 4 now.  With the last two kids, by the time they were this age, I was expecting another one. That is no longer the case.  The shop is closed.
Some days lately, it makes me sad.  My littlest is getting so big.

This article made me want to treasure my time with him.
Today was a Beautiful day, so we got out and did that.
We've only got one more year left of Preschool.
Time for Mama to stop and smell the roses.
Well, not literally.
But Jake and I went outside to play. He climbed, slid, and got in the hammock with me.
And it was good.

The roses aren't quite ready to stop and smell yet, but the Allium is blooming.
When we planted a 3 pack last year, Eric called them Dr. Seuss flowers.  The nickname has stuck.
We're still calling them Dr. Seuss flowers.  I may need more than 3.  I think I like having them around.   They are kind of funny and fun at the same time.  They really are a Dr. Seuss sort of Flower.

Speaking of fun and funny, taking an outdoor break with Jake was exactly what I needed.
He was giggly and creative, and it's good to see him get a little crazy on his own.
He's growing so fast.  I'm gonna miss having my baby around.
My baby is 4, I need to take a moment just to work on stop calling him My Baby.
Nah, that's never gonna happen.  I'll just take some time to treasure each age.
They really do go fast.

Happy Birthday Baby!

A Top Ten of my Sweet Boy and his Birthday!
I can't believe this sweetboy is now 4!

1. Jacob was not too patient once he realized there was Birthday Pig Present for him.
He woke us all up a bit early, and wanted to open it right away.  This was the only picture that wasn't blurry, the boy was in Motion!

2.  Originally, Jacob was so interested in his new Rescue Bots robot Blurr and Salvage, he didn't care about opening the other presents.  Then Sam grabbed one and tried to help him open it.  His big brothers were as pumped about his birthday as Jake was!

3.  Jacob is 4.  He has no problems showing off these 4 fingers now!

5.  As soon as he was dressed, he carried his cushion upstairs, by himself, and his Rescue Bots.
He thought they all needed to watch an episode of Rescue Bots.

6.  Jacob also received all new bedding for his room. He had requested in passing the Lego Batman sheets, so he got the sheets, comforter, and giant batman pillow.  Mommy made up the bed while he was at school and he was very surprised.

7.  Daddy came home just as he was waking from his nap.  He was in a snuggly mood.  And it was Beautiful.

8.  When we asked Jacob what he wanted for his Birthday Dinner, he told us Macaroni with Macaroni. Daddy made him the equivalent of almost a whole box.  He and Sam both got helpings like this.  He was so happy, but mildly annoyed that Mommy kept wanting to take pictures.

9.  Since we're having a cake at his party on Friday night, we just got him a tiny cake at Kroger for today.  He picked out the chocolate peanut butter cake.  He blew out the candles before we even finished singing.

10.  This was our last hurrah, curling up in the hammock as the day came to an end.
A perfect ending to a great day. <3

An Expensive Flower Walk

On Jacob's Birthday, I did a little something for me.
My friend Kathy had written, saying that the IMA (Indianapolis Museum of Art) had a Blue Poppy in Bloom in their gardens.  They were having a big wingding Spring Blooms exhibit.   I wanted to go.  I've always wanted to photograph a Blue Poppy.  But they don't grow here.  I had heard that once some grew in St. Louis in their fancy Gardens.  But they prefer it chilly, so getting them here in Indy is a little tricky.  Somehow the IMA made it work.
Well, I decided that Birthday Week is the Time to make the most of it.
It was 18$ to go to the Museum, we had to pay to get in, just to walk around the Gardens.  Ugh.
But I was willing to do it, just to cross this Bucket List item off my List.

So Kathy met me there shortly after they opened, we grabbed a very quick lunch in their cafeteria, and hit the path. We were on a Mission to find the Blue Poppy.
In the mean time, we found Lots of Pretties!  Here's the Top 20.

1. I go on a Very Expensive Flower Walk.

2. The Tulips were in Bloom.
We found some varieties we'd never seen before.
I love these pinks with orange variations, almost stripey.  Gorgeous!

3. Glowing purple tulips.
The early tulips were done, but a lot of them were still going strong.
I love this line of pretties.

4, Smell-o-vision!
Near the Four Season Garden, we found a lilac blooming.
This lilac had tiny blooming flowers, tinier than usual, but so good and stinky.

5. We found a Blue Poppy!
We found the Blue Poppies Blooming among these hand size giant white tulips.
The first we found was at the base of a statue in the Four Seasons Garden.

6. A Good Closeup shot of a Blue Himalayan Poppy.

7. Hot Blue Poppy
When I got close up to one Blue Poppy, it looked almost wilty.  While did did near 80 degrees this day, they prefer cool temps.  Their shade of Blue is the most perfect for a flower, and I think, very unusual, especially for Indiana.
I love how silky they look up close.  I wanted so badly to reach out and touch it.
But I didn't.

8. Peek a boo Orange
The stamens on the Blue Poppies ar Orange, but they face downward, it's a little hard to see.

9. My favorite Poppy shot.

10. Near a shady bush, a random pale pink tulip blooms.
It was strange, most of the tulips in this garden were white, but this pale pink fella seemed so happy as he was stuck by the sunlight.

11.  The Lilly House
The Lilly House grounds was where we used to picnic when we could come here for Free.
Not anymore.

12. A Sea of Black Tulips.
These tulips are so dark, they are almost black.  Kind of really dark red or purple, but blackish.
Either way, pretty.

13.  A close up of a Black Tulip.
This one is neat, because it's got 8 leaves, most of the time they only have 6.

14.  Glowing tulips.
We found a separate garden by the Greenhouse.
They said it was Temporary.  But it was so pretty the way these little pinkies and oranges were glowing.

15.  "When two friends are giggling in a nest, it's called tweeting."
There was an piece of artwork by the Greenhouse of these wire mesh painted birds, and we could become part of the nest.  I loved it. So we were taking pictures of each other in the nest, when ladies coming in asked to take our pictures.  We let them, and giggled like teenagers the whole time.

16.  Prize winning Orchid
The greenhouse was full of Orchids.  Orchid lovers are odd people, obsessive.  I had an orchid, a blue one Eric got me for Valentine's Day.  It survived until Fall.  I don't think my Green Thumb is green enough to keep Orchids alive, not while I have little kids.  This one was really neat though. He won Blue Ribbons at the State Fair and other contests.

17.  A Lady Slipper with Black Background
I brought a piece of felt to create a background for flower photos, but when the sun was at the back it goofed all my photos up.  This was the only one where it looked good.

18.  A nifty Begonia.
When they water the begonias in the greenhouse, little droplets held on tight.  It took me a bit of time to get a good photo of the droplet in the begonia.  I loved how this happy orange one turned out.

 19. Nemesia Sunsatia Blood Orange, Common Name: Nemesia
Kathy was trying to capture this pretty little flower in a bucket on her camera phone, but it wasn't working.  I got decent shots, I liked this closeup though.  Afterwards, I couldn't find what the flower was.  So I posted it on the IMAs Facebook Page, and they told me.  Hooray!

20.  We found Art!
This was the only sculpture we saw on our adventure.  And Kathy had to kind of drag me over by it.
But she said, we needed to actually see some Art, for the amount we paid to get into the Gardens.
So here we are, by Five Brushstrokes by Roy Lichtenstein.  I think it looks like Bacon.  Rainbow colored Bacon. I don't see the big deal.

When I asked the IMA about the flowers, they were kind and said, That's what they were here for.  Hmm... I often feel that way about my Oils.  But I don't find that often elsewhere. I kind of liked their attitude.  I don't know if I like it enough to not be pissed I spent more than $30 to take pictures of flowers.  Or to go back.  Still it was a neat adventure.  And I got to see the Blue Poppy.  That was Pretty Amazing, and we had a Good Time. We'll see if I ever go back.
