Eagle Creek and Rick's

I'd been sick.  And I wanted to go on a date with Eric.
But my cold was so annoying I couldn't taste much.
I didn't want to be that person coughing in public, the Covid 19 novel coronavirus is going around, and while I don't think I have it.  I don't want to be stared at because I was coughing on people.  I started coughing on Feb 29, and I really haven't stopped.  .  The coronavirus has a fever, and shortness of breath, which I don't have either of those. I have had to cough so hard I had to pee.  I do think I got some viral crud, but I'm doing the good things, drinking my Ningxia and taking my Catalyn, so I am not succumbing. This week was the first week I actually felt like doing things

Eagle Creek Park on a sunny day.

I saw the signs.
Monday, Avon closed the schools.  Tuesday, I went to Costco. Wednesday, I went to visit Aunt Jan, pick up some stuff from her, and today, Thursday, Eric and I finally got our date lunch.

He had been reading that along with the price of gas dropping, the price of lobster was going down.
So I suggested we go somewhere where we could get lobster for cheaps.
According to the interwebs, Rick's Cafe Boatyard had lobster for 'market price'.
So off we went.
It was a Beautiful Day.

Filet mignon topped with crabcake and shrimp etoufee.
After much debate about lobster, which wasn't on sale actually, I got beef.
I love this dish. I get it every time I come here.
So, since the lobster wasn't on sale after all. I got the old reliable, amazing filet and etoufee.

My handsome date.  Me and my etoufee, and he got scallops and asparagus.  We started with salmon nachos, which were so weird, they were awesomely delicious.
All good choices. Really

Don't forget to sometimes Date Your Spouse.
It's nice to sit down and just talk to each other.
We discussed the virus, what was happening, we could feel things were about to change.
I'm glad we got to talk about it today, before we got the news.

My honey and me!

OK, so it's a lot of silhouette, and not the best shot.
However, we look happy.
We'd seen a blip of a basketball game while we were there. They cancelled it at half time.
The cancelled the Basketball tournments. Things are changing.
Our lunch was Excellent.  And we had quiet adult conversation.
I think this will be vitally important in the coming days.
When the kids were at Kumon, we got a call from the School.
Our schools are now closed too, we're closed for the next week, and through Spring Break.
School's out until April 5.  At least.
I'm glad I got a date with my husband.

Birdfeeding

We had a visitor to the backyard.
The word is out, I have full new birdfeeders in the backyard.
Eric and I went to the Birds Unlimited store over break and I got a week after-Christmas present of new feeders.  And it's become clear, the birds know.
Today, it wasn't just juncos visiting.
All my little lbb's (little brown birds) disappeared when this big fella paid a visit.
I don't think he managed to eat any of my regular visitors.
But he searched out the woodpile to see where they were all hiding and wintering.

I thought it might be a broad tailed hawk, but it could be  Cooper's hawk.
That tail is spooky.
A friend mentioned she used to keep her birdfeeders full, until she realized she was drawing in birds to the feeder that fed other birds.  Big raptors like these hover around little feeders like mine, to eat.
Talk about Birdfeeding!

Outside

6/366
The theme of the day was Outside.

What a Sunset!
The kids last day of Winter Break was today, and they didn't want to do much.
They wanted to play video games.
I limited their screen time to 1 movie, and 1 1/2 hours of Video game time.
That was reward for being amazing at the dentist's office in the morning.
Then they had Kumon in the evening.
When I returned from Kumon, Eric arrived home shortly thereafter, and he was chatting with me.
In the middle of his sentence, I stopped.  I grabbed my phone and ran outside to snap these from the front porch.

Not bad for no filter pic from my phone.
Someday I want to learn how to paint.  Like Bob Ross or something, just park me with an easel and paints, and I'll make happy little trees.
I'll paint sunsets like this one.

Mysterious Footprints

29/365
Magic
The Photo of the Day theme is Magic.
What sort of Magical Creature makes this crazy track in the snow?
I was so confused.

Turns out it was the blowing leaves.

A Tale of Ice and Cold

1/365
Happy New Year!

We started the New Year off right with shots of Ningxia Red!
It had been the first White Christmas in a while. But on New Year's we got Slammed with a Arctic Wall of Cold.  Suddenly, it was so cold the kids didn't even want to go outside and play.   It was -15 when we got up, but it got up to a balmy -5 during the 'heat' of the day.

But it motivated me to do some Experimenting.
I showed the kids what can happen if you throw boiling water out the door when it's -10 (in the -20s with wind chill) degrees outside!  It turns to snow instantly.  So Cool!

Sam was ready to play!
Meanwhile, the boys were Perfectly ok playing indoors!  Chris was so crazy to finally be not grounded, he played in the basement most of the morning.
But he did venture up to play in other ways.

The Family Band!!

Yes, it's Loud.  Yes, they are Crazy.
But for once, they are doing something, the same thing.  Together.
And I love it.

We resumed the semi-regular performance of
Star Wars: The Crazy Wars.

But even Chris got bored with being indoors.
So I recruited him to come outside and blow bubbles with me, for Science.

He blew bubbles, and let me try to photograph.
As the sunset.
It was Beautiful.

For about one minute.  Apparently, that's all he could handle.

However, in that one minute time, though I didn't get any photos of the bubbles freezing, I did get this one, (with my cell phone of all things!) of a bubble deflated and crystalline after popping and blowing into the snow.  Very Cool.  It ended up being my favorite shot of the evening.  I put this one up for my themed photo of the day.

I Am Here.
I am crazy enough to go outside when it's -10 and take pictures of bubbles.
And then Chris had to go inside.

But it was ok, I had another volunteer helper.

Eric volunteered (sort of) to help me go outside and photograph bubbles.
And he did a great job.  The first ones didn't even come off the wand!

See the frosty edge of the bubble, it was freezing before they even left the wand.
The kept popping so fast.

If you look closely, you can see the lines of crystallization.

See how the bubbles get foggy or cloudy.  That's the bubble freezing!

These bubbles couldn't even retain their shape they were freezing so fast.

This was the neatest shot, you can see the crystals swirling on the bubble.  So Cool.

This bubble hit the ground and didn't pop immediately.
The frozen crust of bubble, just kind of changed shape with the air, like

I loved the way the bubble rolled, I was actually able to chase this one a bit.

Can you see the concrete print in the bubble?
So neat.

The Bubble cracked down the middle.  And still didn't disintegrate.
But these last four photos, I took though I didn't know if I got the shots, because I couldn't feel my fingers at all.  It was time to go inside.
Talk about suffering for my art.

I curled up on the couch, and got serenaded by the cast of
Star Wars: The Crazy Wars.

It looks like it's going to be an Amazing Year!

Trees

Something I learned about Trish when she was visiting, she loves trees, and every night she feels Called to go out and watch the sunset.
Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's time for us to gear up for Christmas.
But God has sent us some beautiful weather this week, and beautiful sunsets.
I like watching the sun set from my front porch.

Meanwhile, inside, Eric got the big family tree up and lit this past weekend.
But it's a little hard to get the kids all together, and behaving enough to put on the ornaments.

So Mommy gets to play with her phone, with bokeh, background lights.

I'm happy to break out the big guns this holiday.
I love my Christmas Spirit, it's a wonderful combination of Orange, Cinnamon, and Black Spruce.
Yum!

This is my new favorite picture from this week.
My phone wasn't focusing on the Christmas tree, so I got a screen full of bokeh lights, and I hit Snap, and got this beautiful shot!  I have no idea how it happened.  But I like it!

I did get the upstairs snowflake tree decorated today.
I was rather proud of myself, since I had a bunch of other kid drama (one kid to orthodontist, and the other requires daily visits to the school to give him eye drops.) I haven't been able to get much done this week.  Still, I love this blue and silver tree.

And I unpacked our Disney tree decorations after Eric set it up.
It seems to me, there could be more room on this tree for Disney ornaments.
On this day, in 2009, we took the kids on their first trip to Walt Disney World, to celebrate all Christopher's tube and ostomy triumphs. It doesn't seem like it's been 8 years, but it has.

It must be time to go back.

Epic Vacation Day 7 - Friday at Club Med

I have to write down the days of the week, when I tell our stories about our trip, because I won't remember otherwise. Isn't that the sign of a great vacation, where the days all blur together, and simply make us smile?!  Well, Mission Accomplished.

Another Beautiful day at Club Med.
After Breakfast we walked back to our room, which is the corner on the second floor on the brown building in the lower left corner.  It had been an oddly quiet morning.  Chris had spent the night at Grandma and Grandpa's room, so they got him ready for camp.   Technically our room only sleeps 4, however it is possible to get 3 into the Kind  And let the big kids have  the couch beds.  It turns out getting only two children ready in the morning doesn't take as long.

This pretty little fella was parked on the roof just outside our room door as we returned from breakfast.

We decided that this was a Red Shoulder Hawk, because of that rusty shading, and those black and white marking on the tail. I love whatbird.com website for bird identification.

It's the tail that gives it away.  That black and white tail with the rust (red chest and shoulders) make it a Red Shouldered Hawk.  He was probably 3 feet away from me as we went to the door of the room.  He just sat there looking at us.  The kids would've thought that was Awesome, but they were already in Kids Club.

It was going to be a hot day, and it occurred to us that we needed to get Christopher a hat the day before.  When we bought one for Chris, I found one that I liked.  I kept thinking of it.  So when we walked by the shop, looking for postcards, I bought the hat for myself.

Like it, it's Autumn Sunrise?
One of my favorite lines from Ghost.
I think the rule is you can't wear white after Labor Day, unless you are at the Beach in Florida and it's 80 degrees.  Because I saw a lot of folks wearing white.
And I got a new happy hat!

We went to the family pool to hang out with Mom and Dad.  While we were there, we saw the boys playing down at the other end.

My sweetboys came over to pay us a visit.  They were with their Kids Club Crew, swimming, but since they both aren't really in danger of drowning, as they are better swimmers, they are allowed to come and go as they wished.  We even gave them permission to roam.  I thought they'd use it to go get a smoothie, but No, they wanted to go swim.  All the time!

Mom and Aunt Teri doing the Water Aerobics class. Aqua Gym.
They talked me into it.  Moments before, I was out in that water too.
It was actually a fun class, except it focused a lot on having my arms out of the water.
My arm strength is crappy, and my knees aren't too hot either.
I have to watch it, and not overdo it too much.

Play I Spy.  Do you spy a Sweetboy?
We snuck into Kids Club early, to take the kids Paddleboating.  Only they were having such a great time, they didn't want to leave.

Sam shoots new friends with a water pistol from the right.

While Sam shoots, Jacob runs under the giant water mushroom.  He didn't want to leave, not even for yellow boats.

Now Chris takes a turn shooting at his brothers and cousin Cole coming down the small water slide.
They didn't want to leave early to go Paddleboarding.  They wanted to play.
So we let them.

Bryce made it through a few hours at Kids Club!
He got pretty upset the day before, but on this day, we bumped into Karl and Erica going to pick up the kids.  We'd been able to have lunch together.

He's not too sure about what's going on.

If you're going to recover from a giant meltdown about not being able to go Paddleboarding, sitting in a big tropical chair is the way to do it.  This made him smile.  Although, he'd been so upset, it was a very Mona Lisa sort of smile.

Jacob finds the " fuzzy wheats".
He thought they were pretty fun.
Mommy just loved the lighting.  A sunset. A sweetboy.
Life is Good.

After we changed from the pool, the sun was setting as we headed to supper.
Wow God!

As the sunset over our lagoon, some nifty birds come out to play.
I think this was a Little Blue Heron.
But he was so pretty tapping along, exploring for snacks at sunset.

The wore this sweetboy out.
And check it out.  He let someone hold him.  Lately, he's been in a Mama only phase.
That was another reason that Kids Club was a bit of an adjustment for him.
So sweet as he sleeps.

After dinner, Mom and Aunt Teri talked us into going to the 'Circus Show'.
It was the staff working their own mini-cirque de soleil.
Pretty nifty.
The bummer was it was terribly loud.
It was neat seeing my water aerobics up there swinging on the flying trapeze, but at the same time, obnoxiously loud, I couldn't talk to the kids, Chris was getting so upset at the noise.
He's just not cut out for that.
And who would think of bringing noise cancelling headphones to Club Med.  We didn't.
Jake and Sam stayed with Daddy to go to the Dance Party after the show. Chris and I needed to Get Out of there.  We couldn't take the noise.  (It's very chicken and egg, which came first, Chris hating loud crazy places or me?  Or was it because of Chris that I now hate that sort of thing?)

Can you see who is behind the tree?
It's a Great Blue Heron!
He was 5 feet tall and walking along the waters edge.
We were maybe 20 feet away from him.   He didn't fly away, he just watched us warily with one eye.
It was actually beautiful.
Chris and I just sat there watching him walk.

He walked on past us.
My phone camera didn't want to take anymore pictures.  Too dark, there wasn't enough ambient light.  I refused to let it use the flash, because I didn't want to scare him away.
Once past us, we watched.  You can see his silouette in the golden light reflected on the water.
Very Cool.

There is just something inheritantly peaceful about watching animals by the water, or just sitting by the water.  It's easier at night, one isn't as likely to get sunburned. ;)

For Chris and I, it was a perfect note to end on.  We sat there so long, Daddy and the littles came right down the path to us, and we all went home and went to bed.  ❤
