Sharing the Love

282/365

Last night was our friend Suellen and Alicia's wedding.  They had gotten married in New Hampshire 2 weeks ago, and returned home to have a beautiful reception here in Indiana.  I don't generally talk politics here, but this is my place to talk about what is going on in my life, and this was a highlight for some good friends.  I was thrilled at the beginning of October that the Supreme Court agreed to leave the gays alone, and just let Love be Love.  It couldn't have come at a better time to be able to share in our friend's joyous celebration.  And since these were friends from Butler, it was even better, because so many of our old friends were coming into town for the occasion.  It was going to be Awesome.

And it was.
It was Beautiful.  When I was young, I never would have thought orange would have made a great wedding color, but the couple times I've seen it done, it is Beautiful.  I tell you truly, this was the best reception I'd been to in a while, the most child oriented wedding reception I'd ever attended.  So Family Friendly!  I guess it helped that Alicia and Suellen have a little girl just Sam's age.  From the moment we walked in the door, my boys were bonkers with joy. So appropriate, as so were we all. But for them there was popcorn and crayons, and hats and googly eyes.  It was perfect for my little yahoos.

Sam went straight for the popcorn.

Chris needed to play a little first.

We found our friend Joe, and his eldest and mine bonded again immedieatly.  They are only 5 months apart, and about the same height, and have equal levels of crazy.  It's too bad these guys only see each other once a year or so.  I should do more to fix that.  They are hysterical together.

While all the littl girls immediately took over the stage with their coloring, Jacob just wanted to take over the stage.

Our lovely table, and a few crazy boys.

The First Dance.

This was my favorite moment of the evening.  All the kids, or most of them, took it upon themselves, to just go and sit on the stage to watch the first dance.  It was simple and sweet, and full of love.  When I mentioned that this was my favorite moment of the evening to Suellen as we were saying goodbye later, she said she began to cry during the dance at this vision of an entire new generation, raised in tolerance, that to them seeing a gay couple get married was no big deal, just another wedding, and not thinking anything strange or unusual of it.  And it was true.  My boys aren't going to be thinking that a gay couple having a wedding is any different from any other couple having a wedding.  We did have to have a brief talk with Chris before we went because I told him it was our friends Alicia and Suellen, and he said, "If they're both girls, who's going to be the Daddy?"  So simply, I told him, they are both the Mommies.  But that they know that they want to spend the rest of their lives together, and that's what getting married is, choosing that special someone you love to spend the rest of your life with.  And they chose each other just like Daddy and I chose each other.  There are lots of different kinds of families, just like there are lots of different kinds of people because God Loves Variety.  And that was enough for Christopher.

All the kids couldn't wait to hit the dance floor.
They had a conga line full of kids that went for like 2 hours.  Those kids were all circling the drain and the dance floor at the same time.  And yet, they held it together.  The kids had a great time.

Yes, we all circled up and did the chicken dance.
The old is once again new and awesome through the eyes of a child.

Christopher was breakdancing.  He got down on one shoulder and circled around.  He was having so much fun, he eventually just closed his eyes and kept on circling and circling, feeling the beat through the dance floor.  Maybe he was tired.  I could have left him there a while, but once he tripped a girl, it was time for him to get up.  And he was tired.

But not as tired as this sweetpea.  He was acting so tired, but he just wanted to get right back out on the dance floor.  Even when Jake was too tired to dance, he let us all dance with him.  Here, Kathleen, his Godmother got to get a dance in with him.

Sam was getting a bit punchy there at the end too.
After the third boy started getting punchy, we decided to say our goodbyes and hit the road.

The boys got to say goodbye to Suellen, they loved how much she looked like a princess.
It was all so beautiful and joyful.  We had a wonderful time.
It was so wonderful to be able to share their joy and love.

I love this! This summer we went to Provincetown, MA and took a long walk. We saw many more same gender couples than opposite gender. And the boys never even noticed. They were just seeing people being people...people loving people. Yea!
